  • Aseptic Awareness

This one-day courses introduces the concept and importance of aseptic awareness, a fundamental part of microbiology and fermentation.

     TEC-001
     Region: UK
     Classroom
     Role: Laboratory Technician, Other
     Technical
Sector: Industrial Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals

    This Course is Aimed at

Anyone who directly works on the practical side of microbiology and fermentations. The module is best suited to those who have previously had little or no experience of aseptic techniques. The skills gained in this module are normally taught either on-the-job in industry, or on undergraduate microbiology courses.

Students who have completed An Introduction to Microbiology will better appreciate some of the content but this is not critical.

    Overview

A one-day courses introducing the concept and importance of aseptic awareness, a fundamental part of microbiology and fermentation. The course will establish a mindset where well-practiced good aseptic technique is naturally driven by an underlying strong aseptic awareness. Throughout the practicals, students will be advised on what is sterile, what is not and how to keep the barrier, preventing contamination

    Programme Content and Key Areas

      Lecture: Maintaining Culture Purity

      • Aseptic technique: why and how?
      • Sterilisation
      • Biological safety cabinets
      • Movement, contact and awareness

Practical: Preparation and sterilisation of media, feeds and equipment

      • Preparation of liquid and solid growth media
      • Methodology and reasons behind autoclaving and filter-sterilisation
      • Examples of contaminated media/cultures

Practical: Aseptic awareness and basic microbiology techniques

Use of biosafety cabinets and bunsen flames

      Aseptic technique practice during:

      • Pouring and inoculating agar plates and slopes
      • Shake flask work
      • Multi-tasking and in areas of limited movement

      Lecture: Spotting contamination

Monitoring and dealing with contamination in:

      • Cell banks
      • Flasks and plates
      • Fermenters

    Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the concept of aseptic awareness and its importance
    • Learn the methods of sterilisation and when to use them.
    • Appreciate the risks, routes and consequences of contamination
    • Gain hands-on practice with basic microbiology skills, using aseptic techniques
