    This Course is Aimed at

    Science Manufacturing Technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a manufacturing team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake. They are proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving their work environment.

    Duration

    Minimum 18 months, typically 24-30 months


    Entry Requirements

    1. Employed in a suitable job role
    2. Entry qualifications determined by the Employer - typically 5 GCSEs inc Maths, English and Science
    3. Must be able to achieve Level 2 Maths and English prior to taking end-point assessment

    Programme Content and Key Areas

    Apprentices must complete a level 3 or 4 qualification in a Science or Technology discipline relevant to their occupation, which is recognised for professional registration by RSciTech or Eng Tech.

    Example qualifications include:

    1. BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science (QCF)
    2. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (QCF)
    3. BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (QCF)
    4. BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Applied Chemistry (QCF)
    5. BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Applied Biology (QCF)
    6. BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering (QCF)
    7. CG Level 3 Diploma in Process Technology (QCF) – can be delivered in the workplace
    8. Level 3 Certificate in Laboratory Technical Skills (QCF)

    Delivery

    1. On and off-the-job training – may be day/block release depending upon knowledge qualification
    2. Teaching, learning and assessment in the workplace
    3. On-going support and progress monitoring
    4. Start at any point during the year


    End-point Assessment

    End-point assessment will be carried out by an Independent Assessment Organisation.

    There are four components to end point assessment:

    1. Review of the Behaviours Evaluation Log
    2. Synoptic Assessment Test
    3. Vocational Competence Discussion
    4. Scenario Case Study

    Progression Opportunities

    The standard is recognised by the relevant professional bodies at Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) level, for which there is a requirement that the technician will participate in subsequent continuing professional development on completion of the apprenticeship.

    This standard meets the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech). Registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.
